Art from the Sea: Art Exhibit by Robert Simmons

This event has already occurred for this date, check our events page for upcoming events.

“Art From the Sea, Works by Robert Simmons” combines photographs taken using light and electron microscopes with constructed art to illustrate both the beauty of the natural world and man’s impact on the estuarine environment.

Dr. Simmons has long been involved with studies of both the natural and human environments. Studies of interactions between microscopic marine predators, prey, and natural degradation of shells lead to spellbinding images of sea shells rarely seen before. Scanning electron microscopy studies of diatoms and foraminifera illustrate the parallels between natural structures and human design. As an environmental microbiology professional he has studied the effects of human habitation and plastics on the estuarine environment.

‘Art is a vitally important part of science’ is a basic tenet of Simmons’ approach to both disciplines. Visualization of natural processes is essential to a more complete understanding of the issues involved. Images of both natural process and the impact of human activity on these processes illustrate the beauty and mystery to be found exploring aquatic environments.

“Art From The Sea” will be on display from October 14th, until February 25th, 2017.  The public is invited to an opening reception Friday, October 14, 5:00-7:30 pm. The exhibition will continue through February 25, 2017. Free to the public, works can be viewed at the ANERR Nature Center during normal visiting hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.  For additional information call (850) 670-7700.
